Dear NUMC,
Dear NUMC Friends,
Last Sunday the scripture was Romans 8:1-11 which contrasts life in the flesh (a life of selfishness) with life in the Spirit (a life of life and peace). In the sermon I mentioned going online to take a “Selfishness Quiz.” These online quizzes vary greatly in quality!! Some are silly; some are more helpful; some are downright embarrassing!
However, stopping to think about selfishness is important. I came across this analysis of selfishness versus strength.

It’s not always easy to distinguish between selfishness and self-care, between strength and doing too much, between life in the flesh and life in the Spirit. But seeking life in the Spirit is key. You will no longer be selfish, Paul says, because God is guiding your life. God’s Spirit is surrounding your life and making it whole. Remember who you are and who you belong to: your selfishness will be under control, and your life will be filled with the love and grace of God’s Spirit.
In your daily prayer time, take a few moments to consider your selfishness and also your strength and notice how God is showing you the ways of strength. That’s life in the Spirit!
Blessings always,
Pastor Mary
