Roy’s Ramblings
One year ago today was our first Cottage Meeting when we first came to Nashville. For those of you that have no idea what that is (was) let me explain. Whenever we first move to a new appointment we try to get to know as many people as possible as quick as we can. The best way we have found to do this is to have cottage meetings. A cottage meeting is a group of church folks and the Ice family getting together to eat, have fun and to get to know each other. We have done this in the past by going to several different parishioners houses over a few weeks; but here it seemed that several folks had never been to the parsonage or wanted to see the renovations that were done … so we hosted all 12 at our home.
Well, what is the significance of this? For several years I have had a set of three questions that every participant answers so that we can get to know each other.
They are:
- Tell me your life story in five minutes or less.
- Tell me what you currently like about this church the most.
- What is your GIG? (God Inspired Goal): If there were no obstacles (time, money, effort, people, etc.) what would you like to see happen?
Everyone is always amazed at the answers to these questions (even folks that have known each other for years). So a year later … these questions still remain important. I truly want to hear peoples life story (Even if I have heard it already – there are always updates and forgotten details). I truly want to know what is going well, and what keeps you coming back for more. And I really want to know your GIG!! Where do you want to see the church go? What can we do? Who can we reach? And how do we reach them best?
