Roy’s Ramblings

This Past Sunday was World Communion Sunday, but with FallFare happening and all the Hub and Bub … we decided to celebrate it this coming Sunday instead. So, what exactly is World Communion Sunday? What does it all mean? Well, as we break it down: Holy Communion joins us all in Christian unity – World Wide.

This sacrament of Holy Communion, or Eucharist, invites us to focus on the holiness of communion (relationship) with God and one another. We hear, as we are presented with the elements: This bread which represents Jesus’ body is broken for you … take, eat, and remember.  This cup which represents the blood of Christ is poured out for you … drink it in remembrance of Jesus. This is an intimate time we get to share with each other as well as with the Christ.

But, what are we remembering? We are remembering all of the mighty and wonderful things that God has done for us: creation, life, strength, abilities, gifts, relationships, grace, peace, etc. We are remembering the Gospel Story and the example of how to live life to its fullest by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the imprisoned, welcoming the stranger, etc. We are remembering that God will never leave us without guidance from the Holy Spirit, that God will never not Love us, and that no matter what … God desires a perfect relationship with us … always.

So, on World Communion Sunday (or in our case this year … they Sunday after) – United Methodists, in conjunction with other denominations and believers worldwide, participate in communion to recognize our unity in following the example set before us by Jesus. We Eat, Drink and Remember and in doing so are Blessed to be a Blessing.
