November 22

Roy’s Ramblings

I didn’t do it this year, but a couple of years ago I decided to post on Facebook each day in November something for which I was thankful. The month started out pretty easy – Thankful for family, for food, for clothing, for shelter, for education, for friends … you know basically thankful for typical first world blessings. Then, as the days went by, and the closer it got to the Thanksgiving holiday, the harder my posts were. I had run out of the surface topical stuff and had to start thinking of stuff that I hadn’t already said. Suddenly … food and clothing had turned into: I’m thankful for the brilliant doctors and medical staff for their miracles of modern medicine … I’m thankful for the checks and balances built into our form of government … I’m thankful for the forgiveness of folks toward me for my shortcomings. After 20 or so days, the depth of thankfulness had increased tremendously.

So, this brings me to my thoughts and ramblings today … what do we stay with long enough that we truly get deeper into it? I am amazed by the folks that know their “Passion Subject” so very well. Those that know money and numbers, those that know law and the legal system, those that know medical and health stuff, and those that know the general “Get stuff done and get it fixed” folks. They seem to be geniuses in their field of interest and passion. The problem arises when they try to talk to others that do not share their interest or passion and get frustrated by their ignorance.

So, as we celebrate being thankful; I encourage you to thank others for their interest, passion, and depth of knowledge in their fields. I encourage you to thank others for their willingness to listen to your ramblings about your fields. And I encourage all of us to be thankful for the many levels of blessings we all have – from the surface easy stuff, to the deep hard to reach stuff, and all the stuff in between. A friend gave me this quote the other day: Gratitude is the Feeling … Thanksgiving is the Action.
